We are one of the most diverse and highly trained departments in the country.  We have the honor of safeguarding and protecting not only our nation’s residents, but also people from all over the world.  This position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department, Professional Development Bureau, Human Resource Management Division. 

This incumbent will be responsible for the following:

• Provides technical/functional advice, and internal consulting services on classification practices; performs a full range of duties and responsibilities related to position classification, position management, and departmental design. 

• Conducts classification studies; evaluates and classifies positions including those in a wide range of highly specialized and technical fields, ensuring accuracy and compliance with classification standards and practices. 

• Designs positions systematically so they are sensible, consistent and relate to other positions in an orderly, productive, and efficient manner with logical career patterns.

• Reviews and interprets classification or other job evaluation standards, staffing patterns and organizational charts, and interprets and applies governing laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Analyzes the department’s classification plans to ensure their viability, and that they are achieving their intended objectives. 

• Ensures the competitiveness of MPD’s classification programs by conducting job analysis, position description review and development; establishes positions and job codes; planning and conducting desk audits; constructing and applying competitive level codes; processing realignments; providing management advisory services; and developing evaluation reports.

• Conducts realignment and reorganization projects based upon management requests.  Reviews and develops organizational structures and position descriptions, and makes recommendations to management. 

• Actively, participates in the preparation and recommendation of program policies, procedures, regulations, reports, directives, draft legislation, etc., for adoption and implementation involving issues and subjects relating to the compensation and classification programs. 

• Develops instructional material and conducts training classes for departmental human resource (HR) technicians in all aspects pertaining to position classification programs.

• Responds to classification related inquiries from MPD employees, other District government agencies and the general public.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.
