Serves as a Psychiatric Nurse with responsibility for providing professional nursing services to patients with psychiatric conditions and complex physical conditions. Utilizing the nursing process, conducts nursing assessments, synthesizes and analyzes data, develops nursing objectives and develops, implements, and evaluates nursing interventions.  Documents all components of the nursing assessment process.  Participates in patient interviews, nursing conferences, group meetings, and ward activities to assist in the development and implementation of nursing care plans and interdisciplinary recovery plans.  Guides paraprofessional staff in the implementation of nursing interventions. Establishes constructive one-to-one relationships with assigned patients. Co-leads therapeutic groups with patients assuming a progressively more independent role in the conducting of such groups to eventually lead therapeutic groups. Administers prescribed medications and treatments.  Takes and records vital signs.  Observes patient’s condition, assesses nursing needs, and provides required nursing care. Observes, reports and records behaviors and reactions of individual patients and groups.  Observes and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration data, and effects of medication.  Prepares patients for tests, examinations, and treatment.  Performs first aid for minor burns, cuts, bruises, and sprains.  Maintains appropriate records and prepares required reports. Contributes to the development and maintenance of the therapeutic milieu that reflects the recovery model.  Makes nursing care assignments to non-professional nursing personnel with varying levels of skill. When assigned assumes charge nurse responsibilities. May serve as resource nurse to newly assigned lower graded nurses.  Attends mandatory and assigned in-service programs. Performs other related duties as assigned.

RESIDENCY PREFERENCE AMENDMENT ACT OF 1988

A person applying for a position in the Career Service, Educational Service, Management Supervisory Service, a line attorney position in the Legal Service (series 905), or an attorney position in the Excepted Service (series 905) who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points.  If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment.  Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
