DC Public Library seeks Children's Librarian - $55k to $71k

This position is within the Public Services unit of the District of Columbia Public Library system and serves as a Children’s Librarian. The position is responsible for professional functions that support the efficient operation and best use of the libraries by children ages (0-12). 

Under the general direction of a Branch Librarian, the incumbent provides reference and advisory services to customers; provides assistance in study oriented activities and in developing children’s reading interests; plans, schedules, conducts and evaluates children’s programs and class visits, develops and maintains the branch collection of children’s literature to meet the needs of the community; compiles reading lists on subjects assigned and prepares the display of books. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as service architect for location’s children’s engagement by designing, promoting, delivering, and evaluating programs, services, and outreach that align to community needs and library’s strategic goals. Collaborates on this with other DCPL staff in and beyond the location. 

  • Manages location’s physical collection for children by using established processes and procedures for weeding materials, requesting new materials, and analyzing usage. May also assist in collection movement and maintenance by shelving and shelf-reading. 

  • Collaborates with manager and colleagues to optimize use of location by users associated with children. 

  • Provides direct customer service to library customers (for example, answering basic and advanced informational, directional, technology, and referral questions; reader’s advisory, etc.) and assistance in using the library and its resources. 

  • Maintains familiarity with DCPL’s electronic collections and resources and various options for accessing them, including web interfaces, streaming platforms, and mobile apps. Is able to instruct a library customer how to access any electronic collection or resource. 

  • Assists in maintaining a welcoming and comfortable library environment by following DCPL Appearance Guidelines and enforcing DCPL Rules of Behavior, as needed

  • Maintains awareness of community needs, including the needs of schools and other community institutions and organizations. Establishes community partnerships that align to community needs and library’s strategic goals. 

  • Serves as location point-of-contact for customers and library administration when manager isn’t present. 

  • Attends meetings, workshops, and trainings as assigned. May serve on committees and other working groups as assigned.
