Free Saturday Boat Rides on the Anacostia River

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

UPDATE: ALL BOATING SESSIONS FROM APRIL 24 - MAY 22 HAVE BEEN FILLED. However, there will be more sessions made available starting in May! Add your email HERE to be the first to know!

Join us this summer on Saturdays at high tide for a free opportunity to paddle and clean the river!
See our Events Calendar for session times.

Each Saturday DOEE and Living Classrooms will be hosting 2 boating sessions, each session lasting 2 hours. These sessions are part of a citizen science program focused on collecting marine debris (typically plastic bottles) from the Anacostia River. We'll weigh it, count it, and measure the volume of the various types of trash we collect while paddling. The data you help us obtain is critical to informing policy and education focused on reducing litter that washes into the river.

Each 2-hour session includes an orientation, 60-90 minutes of paddling time, and a short trash sorting and weighing period at the end. You’ll be assisted and guided by staff certified in paddling education and CPR/First Aid. The program will run on Saturdays for the duration of the summer from April 24 to August 28. Currently, you are permitted to reserve a slot up to one month in advance. Use the appointment scheduler below to check for the current available dates.
