Washington, D.C. - May 19, 2014 – In celebration of the opening day of the Ward 8 Farmers Market (W8FM), THEARC will host special ceremony free and open to the public. Patrons and community residents will be able to join in free Zumba & Tai Chi lessons, participate in free cooking demonstrations hosted by Whole Foods, tour THEARC’s Organic Teaching Garden and enjoy music and festivities while shopping for fresh, local produce and quality meats. Children will have access to face painting, a moon bounce and free books. Health screenings and HIV testing will be provided on-site as a part of THEARC’s Community Wellness Fair; an effort  supported by WC Smith, The Samueli Institute and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC.)

The Ward 8 Farmers Market Opening Celebration will take place in conjunction with THEARC’s Community Wellness Fair on Saturday, June 7th from 9AM-2PM in the parking lot of THEARC.
This annual event was designed to re-introduce residents of Ward 8 and beyond to organic fresh fruit & vegetable offerings.

According to the DC Department of Health, only 32% of Ward 8 residents consume fresh fruits and vegetables, due to accessibility and cost. In order to meet the needs of our community and patrons, vendors of the W8FM accept WIC, SNAP & senior vouchers. THEARC is located on four different public transportation bus routes and are near two major rail stations. This year, the goal is to introduce a regular calendar of activities throughout the summer and fall months which will not only provide free, healthful activities for youth & adults, but entice new customers. In addition to the market offerings, community members will have access to free yoga, cooking  demonstrations, youth art activities and performances at the W8FM from June 7 - November 22.
