WABA’s East of the River grant will wrap up its season with the first-ever Cap City Bike Expo on Sat., Nov. 16 at the Anacostia Arts Center (1231 Good Hope Road SE). The expo will include a bike-vendor marketplace, musical acts DJ Underdog and DJ Native Sun, games, a photobooth, a raffle, crafts, bike art, and panels discussing bike mobility in and around wards 7 and 8. It will also mark the official launch of the Black Thumbs Collective, a grassroots effort to empower east of the river residents with basic bike repair skills.

Local bike shops will be at the Expo showing off their products and providing mechanical expertise to attendees. Come ready to talk about the role of bikes and bike shops in your community! Childcare will be provided. The Cap City Bike Expo is free! RSVP here.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Food! Entertainment! And some conversations about bike advocacy!
The Cap City Bike Expo is bringing family-friendly fun to the Anacostia Arts Center: There will be crafts, a photobooth, games, a raffle, and art. DJ Underdog and DJ Native Son will provide a great soundtrack. Childcare will be provided from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and there’s a first-come, first-serve breakfast.

But the Expo will also create a safe space for discussion of how biking works east of the river. As part of our East of the River program grant from the District Department of Transportation, we want to encourage—in addition to increased mobility by bike—conversation about riding a bike in wards 7 and 8. To that end, the Cap City Bike Expo will feature a number of panels and moderated discussions intended to solicit feedback about bike infrastructure:

Bike Shop Working Group: Local shop owners will be present to talk with and listen to Expo attendees about bike-shop advocacy and community engagement, best practices for customer service, how to engage new demographics, and how to address the scarcity of bike-repair facilities in wards 7 and 8.

My Bike, My Child: Megan Odett of Kidical Mass will discuss just how, exactly, you bike with a kid.
Introduction to Advocacy: Bike-advocacy professionals will share with Expo attendees ways to get engaged with the public-input process and influence local-level change.

Meet-and-Greet: WABA’s members and supporters east of the river will have ample time to get to know each other.
