WARD 8 VOLUNTEER WANTED FOR SUSTAINABLE DC ORGANIZER PROGRAM

Dear Sustainable DC Stakeholders,

Since we started the Sustainable DC planning process, people have continually been telling us that they would like to become more involved. Well, here is your chance!

As DC residents, we are all responsible for making our city the healthiest, greenest, most livable city in the nation. In everyday decisions, we each contribute to achieving the ambitious goals listed in   A Vision for a Sustainable DC weatherizing our homes, using less water, taking more trips by transit, supporting District businesses. While a lot of people across the city know about Sustainable DC, even more residents still haven’t heard about the initiative. As the planning team, we have been talking with residents across the city, but we know that we are not always the best deliverers of this message. That is why we are asking you to join us in helping spread the word about Sustainable DC!

At last week’s working group meeting, we mentioned the Sustainable DC Organizer program, which is an opportunity for sustainability supporters like you to take a leadership role in reaching out to more people. We need community leaders and passionate volunteers to talk about the plan and the ways in which residents, workers, and even visitors, can become more sustainable, save money, live healthier and enjoy the qualities of a more sustainable city.

What will the Organizers do?
a.         Identify outreach opportunities in their communities or peer groups to represent Sustainable DC and explain the initiative
b.        Attend community festivals and events to represent Sustainable DC by answering questions and explaining the plan
c.         Meet other sustainability advocates and professionals and serve as a leader within your community.

What is expected of Organizers?
a.         Attend a 2-hour training session to learn how to publically represent the Sustainable DC plan
[Tentative Training Date: December 11 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at DDOE Offices, 1200 First St, NE, Rm 718. Due to size restrictions, attendees will be confirmed by Sustainable DC staff.]
b.        Attend 1 to 2 events per month as an Organizer, for 6-months initially
c.         Organizers are not official DC Government representatives and are not allowed to promote private businesses while volunteering.

To apply to become a Sustainable DC Organizer, please fill out this short form . This will help us understand who is interested in joining and ensure we have a good mix of volunteers. As we launch the program, we have resources to accept eight organizers.

The Organizer program can also be found online at   www.sustainable.dc.gov For more information, please contact Andrea Limauro, Neighborhood Planner at the District Office of Planning, by email at   andrea.limauro@dc.gov, or by phone at (202) 442-7605. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to working with you to spread the word!

Best,
The Sustainable DC Planning Team
