2012 DC Community Heritage Project Symposium - Contributing to the Historical Narrative
This year's program will include a brief workshop during the opening reception that will provide a step-by-step demonstration of digital preservation techniques.
Following the workshop, a panel of local professionals will discuss the
"State of DC Local History."Experts in the field of historic preservation and local history will explore the involvement of local citizens in the documentation, interpretation, and preservation of Washington, DC's neighborhoods and districts.
Led by moderator Mickey Fearn, Deputy Director of the National Parks Service, each of the five panelists will talk about their respective work and their observations about the state of the field. They will address issues such as: the involvement of DC residents (as opposed to academic experts) in the development of community histories; the beneficial effects from the "grassroots public history/preservation movement"; how the work of community organizations have made a difference or added value to surrounding neighborhoods and knowledge of residents; and whether the right people are telling the right stories in current community histories. Following these remarks, Deputy Director Fearn will pose additional questions for the panel and will host an audience Q&A session.
The final element of the program will include remarks from Jefferson Bailey, a current Fellow at the Library of Congress' Office of Strategic Initiatives. He will deliver a seminar on digitally preserving personal artifacts and heirlooms, using items scanned during the reception at the start of the event.
