Ward 8 City Council Candidate, Natalie Williams is calling upon the Council of the District of Columbia; specifically the District's at-large members, to enact emergency legislation regarding the number of group homes, transitional housing, and community-based residential facilities approved for Ward 8.
On Tuesday, Ward 8 residents and business leaders of the community, held a Council Conversation and Community Sit-in at the Office of Councilman Marion Barry. (See Video)
The purpose was to raise the issue of oversaturation of group homes, transitional housing, and community-based residential facilities to the appropriate powers that be -- Councilman Jim Graham, Chairman of the Human Services Committee who oversees such issues on group homes and shelters, and to Councilman Michael Brown who sits on that committee.
Our sit-in at Councilman Barry's office was just that - to send a message that his office doesn't belong to him, but instead to the people of Ward 8. He is our representative. And when he stops representing our issues on our behalf, then we are coming to regain our office back, and let our voices be heard.
As a result of our meetings and sit-in with both Councilman Jim Graham and Councilman Michael Brown the conversation is being addressed at the highest level. I thank both Councilmembers for taking the time to listen to our concerns, and for taking the first step of addressing this issue.
Paid for by the Committee to Elect Natalie Williams. Nardyne Jefferies, Treasurer
