Pictures of 1217-1219 Good Hope Rd SE - What Could Have Been

I took these pictures around 11am this morning, demolition is well underway. At 14,000 square feet this is a very big and very beautiful building in the heart of the Anacostia business district. Although it has been five months since ANC 8A first requested a meeting with Calvary Women's Services there still has not been one. The community is still completely in the dark about what this shelter will look like and how it will operate. I would think that the building plans would have had to go to the Historic Review Board but I am not sure. Perhaps someone out there has seen a rendering?

Today's pictures reveal a very big and very historically beautiful building. Look at those tin ceilings! This would have made a great retail space, restaurant, or theater. So many possibilities for this space, it could have brought much needed retail and dining options to the Anacostia business district. :(

11:20am Update from Facebook:

Someone just called Calvary and Calvary said, "they plan on engaging the [Anacostia] community after holiday fundraising season is over."

If you didn't know (and lord knows I didn't) Calvary is in the midst of their 100 day fundraiser to raise $100k for their "Good Hope Kitchen." You can read the September 7, 2011 press release HERE. Not surprising, the good folks of Anacostia were not asked to participate. All Anacostia is asking is for an opportunity to have a dialogue about something that is going to have a significant impact (whether positive or negative) on their community.

Is that really too much to ask?

Demolition continues on 1217/1219 Good Hope Rd SE
