New Supportive Housing Project Opens In Anacostia

Someone just forwarded the tweet from the Mayor (see below), I did some research and found this RFP from September 2011. No idea how (or if) this is going to have an impact on the homeless shelter coming to 1217 Good Hope Rd SE in Anacostia.

From the RFP:

The Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness (“the Partnership”) is seeking a
non-profit service agency to provide Operations and Case Management services for a Permanent
Housing Program for 13 families at any given time in apartment units to be provided by the
Partnership at 1700 V Street, SE.  The Permanent Housing Program will serve families in which
the head of household is between the ages of 18 – 24.  The program will be designed to assist
families in transitioning to independent permanent housing using identified best practices for
serving youth.

The V Street project is a site based permanent housing project.  This is a logical next step for
families being served in our youth transitional programs.  Youth as a group are inherently in
transition and we have seen many positive steps being taken by families in the transitional
program to engage in activities to further their growth as parents and create a stable base for their
families.  A longer term program with an expected residency of 3-5 years would allow these
families to continue their growth.  The single site design of the program allows for the building
of a community of support but is a design that becomes less attractive to youth as they age.  The
emphasis would clearly need to be on educational and employment objectives that allow the
youth to strive towards more independent housing.
