Last chance until July 9, Green Tomatoes
We're giving our farmers a chance to have a Saturday at home on July 2 and celebrate the holiday weekend with their families.
But they will be out in force on Saturday June
25 at THEARC, 1901 Mississippi SE from 9-2. The cherries have arrived, and the first green tomatoes. We may even see some nectarines.
Our friends at UDC have been inspirational for me. They did a simple braised veggie dish that was so good that I tried a variation at home. Last night for dinner I took a tiny amount of oil and browned some chicken legs from Garden Path Farm in a frying pan. I added a little flavored vinegar, then put some sliced zucchini, potatoes, onions (from James at Penn Farm) and herbs (From Carl at Terrapin Station Herb Farm) in the pan, covered it and simmered it on low heat for about a half hour. Served it over rice and GOT MY 8 YEAR OLD TO EAT VEGGIES. Small parental victories.
If you are feeling more old fashioned, James at Penn Farm has some beautiful green tomatoes. Slice them, dredge them in a little seasoned flour, and fry them for breakfast one morning. If you are feeling really ambitious, dip them in some beaten egg first to lighten the batter.
If you want a preview, our friends at the
Washington Informer, produced a mini video of the market. Click on the man with the hat in the smaller picture to launch the video story.
SPREAD THE WORD. People were lined up last week to get their vouchers. It's true. We will DOUBLE the value of your SNAP, EBT, WIC or Senior Vouchers. If sharing with your community is more important than keeping the line short, please tell your friends and family. We want you to try real farm food, and we are making it easier and cheaper thanks to some generous foundation grants.
