WBJ: Ward 8 apartments open next month

The Overlook at Oxon Run has sat empty for four years, but it will soon fill up with seniors and families.
The $73.4 million project, previously called Parkside Terrace, will officially re-open Sept. 17 with 316 rental units. Residents have just started signing leases, and as of now the complex is 40-percent leased. (Community Preservation and Development Corp. said it recently got the certificate of occupancy to begin leasing -- which was a little behind schedule -- and just started aggressive marketing to help lease up.)
CPDC partnered with H.R. Crawford of Crawford Edgewood Management Inc. to revitalize the twelve-story building at 3700 9th St. SE after it failed as a 100-percent low-income Section 8 family property.
In early 2008, CPDC began the gut rehabilitation of the property in the Washington Highlands neighborhood of Ward 8.
The one- and two-bedroom units, stocked with energy star-rated appliances, will include 181 units on the first seven floors for low-income seniors and 135 units on the top five floors for small families. The senior units will get rental assistance from the D.C. Housing Authority.
