MPD Launches Enhanced Sex Offender Registry with Mapping Capabilities

Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced today the launch of the enhanced Sex Offender Registry Mapping Application. Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Sex Offender Registry Unit partnered with the DC Office of the Chief Technology Officer Geographic Information System (GIS) team and the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA) to include an interactive mapping function.
Since March 2001, the MPD has had an online application which allows users to search for registered sex offenders in the District of Columbia. This application served as a useful tool for the community as well as members of the MPD. The added mapping function builds on the existing data to keep the community informed. The registry also helps promote effective law enforcement and facilitates community self-protection.

In addition to the offender information previously available online, such as an offender’s photograph and his or her work, home or school addresses, the new Sex Offender Registry Mapping Application offers enhanced search capabilities using the following geographies: radius around a specific address; police district, MPD police service area, school, and licensed day care center.
Address information is provided at the block level only; no specific addresses are provided. As a result, users should note that, at times it may appear as if multiple offenders reside at the same address. This is not always the case.
As always, in addition to using the online Sex Offender Registry Mapping Application, community members may visit any police station and inspect a public registry that contains current information about all registered sex offenders in the District of Columbia.
The MPD presumes that information obtained from the sex offender registry will be used responsibly to promote public safety. Unlawful use of sex offender registry information to threaten, intimidate, harass, or injure a registered sex offender will not be toler¬ated and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the Law.
