THIRD ANNUAL PEACE WALK PLANNED FOR KING HOLIDAY

The Coalition for Peace, an ad hoc group of local non-profit community organizations dedicated to promoting peaceful neighborhoods and positive activities for at-risk youths, will hold the Third Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Peace Walk on Monday, January 19, 2009 – the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. (See attachment)

Washington area residents are invited to participate in a two-mile walk beginning at 2500 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, S.E. to Covenant Baptist Church, 3845 South Capitol Street, S.W., in commemoration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Participants are also asked to donate at least one pair of clean, warm socks for the Homeless.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday is a “Day on and Not a Day Off” and President-elect Barack Obama has challenged all Americans to be of greater service to one another. Following the walk, Covenant will host a Volunteer Service Fair, where area non-profits will set-up tables to share volunteer opportunities throughout the year. High school students, especially, are encouraged to attend and find ways to earn their required community service hours for graduation.
