A young girl was fatally injured in Congress Heights this morning, and D.C. police said an adult female was also injured, possibly in the same incident.
Details were sketchy, but police said the girl appeared to be 8 or 9 years old. She was found, apparently stabbed, in a house in the 3400 block of 11th Place SE shortly after 6:30 a.m.
D.C. police spokesman Kenny Bryson said the injured adult flagged down police near the intersection of 13th and Congress streets SE, about 2 1/2 blocks from the house, and told them about the injured child.
Emergency responders found a small fire on the second floor of the house, and at first believed the child had been burned. But once they reached her, they saw that her injuries were from some other type of trauma. The child was alone in the house, an investigator said, and was not breathing when she was found.
Both the woman and the girl were hospitalized for treatment.
Shortly before 10 a.m., authorities said the child had died at the Children's National Medical Center. Bryson said the child appeared to have been stabbed, but said the exact cause of death would be determined pending an autopsy.

The woman's wounds were superficial, said an official with the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, who was assisting in the investigation as part of the city's arson task force.
Police could not immediately say whether the two victims were related to each other or whether they both lived in the house on 11th Place.
"They're trying to put those pieces together now," Bryson said.
