🏆 Oct 23 | Mtng to discuss DHS's plan to open a 100-bed Hypothermia shelter in Congress Heights

Apologies on just now sharing this information but this morning was the first time I saw the flyer (and I’ve been trying for days to get my hands on the meeting information). I’m aware Councilmember Trayon White held a Ward 8 public safety meeting last night but I didn’t see that flyer until this morning.

The Advoc8te STRONGLY recommends your attendance at tonight’s meeting at the Malcolm X Opportunity Center (1351 Alabama Ave, SE). Community members have expressed concerns regarding the safety of minors nearby as this shelter would be in close proximity to an elementary school and earlier in the month an underage girl was raped in front of the Malcolm X Opportunity Center.

On Saturday, October 19, 2019, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, 30-year-old Rakim Davis, of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with First Degree Child Sexual Abuse.

Community members have long expressed their concerns about the over-saturation of shelters and transitional housing in Ward 8. This shelter would join the new facility on Chesapeake Avenue SE (also near a school) as well as the men’s shelter at 801East on the Saint Elizabeth campus (also near schools) not to mention the dozens of other transitional housing facilities in Congress Heights and Ward 8.
